'Tenser' said the Tensor...

This is my first cross-stitch! It is for Morgan and is inspired by the first Hugo Award winner "The Demolished Man" by Alfred Bester. The story is set in the 24th century, in a society where telepaths — "Espers" formally, "peepers" colloquially — help guard peace and order.

The protagonist, Ben Reich, is a businessman who must conceal his murderous intentions from the prying capacities of the telepaths. In order to achieve this, Reich visits a songwriter who teaches him a deceptively simple jingle: 'Tenser', said the Tensor; 'tension, apprehension, and dissension have begun' that proves to be an earworm, so persistent and involving, that it blocks most Espers from properly peeping into Reich's mind. I've had the phrase in my head for weeks, ever since I finished the book for the first time.

For the decorative detail I combined the tilda with the Psi Corps logo from Babylon 5 (one of the telepaths is named 'Bester' as a nod to the inspiration of their origins). The tilda is used in propositional logic to represent negation.

I need to stretch and frame the finished work. But, when its done, then hopefully it will continue to protect us from the government's devious mind-rays. :)

EDIT: Yes, I've read "Tiger, Tiger" or "The Stars, My Destination"! I've got to stem the flow of emails urging me to read it. And yes, it is now my favourite book too. :)

Addictive little blighter isn't it?

I skipped out on some of the words for aesthetic reasons. I hope serious fans won't object. :)

I saw this posted on boingboing and I must say that it is simply amazing. I love Bester and it's always slightly reassuring when I find out that other people do as well.

Holy crap I'm on boingboing!!!!... And thank you! :)

My hubby just emailed me from LA to say that "You're the coolest chick there ever was!" Hehe, I'm so chuffed.

It's good to bring the Bester-love into the decorative arts. I wonder how best I can honor Tiger, Tiger?

If you wanted to stick to cross stitch, you could always do his face tattoos :) Tho I think they changed the title for some reason to "The Stars My Destination". I think the copy I have has Gaiman talking about why they changed the title in the introduction, but it's been a while.

You'll love it, it's one of the most awesome novels I've ever read and by far the most vicious tale of vengeance.

It also beats The Three Musketeers, no question.

Though Tiger/Stars and Demolished Man are fantastic, my personal fave of Mr Bester's works is Golem100.

I further think that it is my fave sci-fi ever.

Concur. Very few people would be likely to agree, though!

Re: Bril!!
From "The Second Night of Summer":

"If I were alone, I'd get out of here! I know when I ought to be scared."

It's online, if you haven't read it:
